If it still works, the easiest way to keep it out of the "waste stream" is to reuse it--give it to someone who wants it. Examples include religious groups, youth programs, or charitable donation programs. You might even be able to claim it as a charitable deduction on your taxes (consult your accountant or tax advisor on your specific situation).
Otherwise, electronics have a variety of components that can be recycled and others that are toxic and should be disposed of specially and not put into landfill. An "e-waste" contractor can handle it properly.
If your local community doesn't have an e-waste program (usually through your county's hazardous waste program), check the EPA's eCycling website for information targeted to where you live. <www.epa.gov/epaoswer/hazwaste/recycl e/ecycling/live.htm>
Good luck and thanks for considering the impacts of your actions.

Keep them! They could be worth something to a vintage electronics collector someday!

Depend on where you live some places have special drop offs and pick ups for stuff like that. Other places it just goes in the garbage.
