If you have one fan, you want it near your cpu, and flowing out of your case. If you have 2 fans, you want one on each side of the case (front and back, not side to side) and one flowing in, and one flowing out. That will maximize air flow in your case.

You have to choose the airflow going outside so that the accumulated heat inside will be sucked out.

flowing inside will get much more cooler air flowing through but gets more dust on your system, so make sure the fan or whatever it is has an air filter to catch dirt
