If you just need one to one connection (wireless laptop to wireless printer), actually you don't need router. But do remember, this connection can't be used for other connection in the same time

Because I think your wireless printer hooks up with the wireless router (wired or wireless I don't know) and then the wireless router acts as a communicator like a helper to get the data from your computer to your printer so it can print. Router don't just send internet over wireless and wired. I think some printers may communicate with your computer via bluetooth but I may be wrong. Go to Hp's website and look at how their wireless printers work. Or just search on Google. Good luck!

If you have a desktop set up with this printer , then you can just setup a network with your desktop and share the printer.
