But a cheap Network Switch which has 5 to 8 ports on it.
You can get them for around $30 US at most Computer Stores.

The "Switch" will plug into the Router and expand the number of ports you can use.

The difference between Cat5 and Cat 6 is the speed. Cat5e has a max thru put of 100Mbps while Cat 6, can deliver a maximum of 1000Mbps
Also, if you are trying to extend your network the maximum distance.. then Cat6 will give you less interference and data loss over distances exceeding 100ft. then Cat5

A crossover cable is used to connect 2 computers directly, without the need for a hub. They will need to have IP addresses manually assigned to them. The reason they are called "cross over" is because the wires are physically crossed so that the end which sends on 1 computer is crossed over to the end which recieves on the other computer and vice versa. Normally a Hub, Switch, or Router does the crossing over for the computers so straight wires can be used... but when there isn't a hub or switch.. then the wires must be manually crossed.

A Cross over cable will allow you to connect 2 computers, but without a 2nd Network card, neither of them will be able to connect to the router.

It would be MUCH more realiable to have a router with multiple ports or add a Switch in between the computers and the router THEN to use a cross over cable.
