Yes and no. Any program that you download, good or bad, will be a .exe. So while you can download Spybot S&D to get rid of spyware, it will come in an .exe file. Same goes for any game and most programs.

.Exe's can also be malicious files, so it's up to you to make the distinction.

If you're downloading programs off of the internet, verify that they're coming from a trusted source. For instance if you're on a manufacturer's website downloading drivers, you know that the content will be safe. Same goes for sites like Downloads.com and so forth.

So no, you can't really avoid downloading .exe's because they are integral to programs and applications. You have to think logically when downloading. If you aren't sure about what you're downloading, then don't accept the download. Or look for it on another website.

When downloading torrents and such, you can read reviews from other people that have downloaded the file. If they give it positive ratings and good feedback, then you can safely assume that it's a genuine file.

Another smart thing is to check the file size of whatever you're downloading. If you're downloading a program, and it comes up as only being 200kb or something, then I would stay away from it as it's probably a false title, and is instead a virus.
