Best Answer:
Linux would never put up much of a challenge as there are relatively few people that are prepared to 'THINK' whilst operating their PC. Windows is 'SAFE' for the masses and supports all the proprietary software. With Linux for us who know, the open source software alternatives are more than adequate and in some cases superior. Many people are suspicious of open source, thinking that if they don't need to pay for it there must be something wrong with it.
As I type this answer I am working on good old Ubuntu Feisty, Linux Mint 3.1 (Celena) to be precise. Its still superior to (Elyssa) however I hold (Darnya) in very high regard.
Competition in the computing world will really hot up upon the release of Windows 7, I am working with (Build 6801) much of the time these days, and its nothing short of awesome.
My conclusion Linux will always have its dedicated followers but never go mainstream and much as I would like it to, but they are just Pipe Dreams.

Yes I do. I would love to see linux on mainstream. It is a opensouce and often even free operating system.
But for now I only see it being used on low-end computer that used linux to keep costs down. Or at least here in the USA.

I want Linux to be my operating system of choice. I really do. But there is such a learning curve (Linux enthusiasts would get up in arms about that, but there is) and there are so many things that you can't do. I think that in a few years that Linux will become an operating system that the masses will move to.
