Most people think stealth gives users this "safer, relaxing environment". However the stealth function doesn't exactly make your computer "invisible". Basically what stealth does is that it keeps the computer from talking when another computer is attempting to make contact with the stealth computer.
Example: I attempted to make contact with your computer:
If I get a message such as "Host unreachable", either your computer is off or disconnected from the internet
If I get a detailed information in return, then I know the port is visible, so the next question is: can I access it?
If I get no message at all, that means I know your computer is active but not talking (that's what stealth is doing).
So is it worth it to enable stealth? It doesn't hurt if you turn on stealth, but you're not better off protected than the other guy with only closed ports (hackers know the ports are there but can't access them (like a closed door)). You're basically just shutting your computer up from talking.

If you have a router between you and the Internet it is probably already hiding all of your ports. Generally if you don't need to receive any data from anything like a printer with a scanner or memory card reader or other such device then you can go ahead and stealth all of your ports. But if something stops working that would be the first thing I'd check.
Also if you were hosting some service for your network, website or fax machine or maybe a graphics device or printer then you need to leave those ports available else no one will be able to use them.
